A brief history of Camborne Bowling Club - Founded 1921 - Affiliated 1922
The Club was formed in 1921 on the site in Tregenna Lane, provided by the C.V. Thomas family. The Green was laid by Mr. J. Davey, with the help of Messrs. J. Vague, W.E. White, S. Nettle and W. Tonkin. Two gentlemen from the Penzance club gave practical and technical assistance, namely Messrs. Kenyon and Richards. The first bowls were bowled in the 1921-22 Season, with the Ladies Section being formed in 1960. Some years later, the freehold of the club was purchased from the Thomas family for £100. Mr.D.W. Thomas on receiving the money, promptly handed it back as a gift to the club. At different times times, the Thomas family have been the Club Presidents. In 1984 a new pavilion, Clubhouse and toilet facilities were erected from club funds and a Sports Council loan.
Members of the Club have given significant service to both the Western Division and County. In 1946, W.H. Coulls, became the first Camborne Club member to be elected Cornwall County President. It was not until 1985, that George Powell became the second member to serve as County President. In 1992 Reg Treneer, became the third member of the Club elected as County President and again in 2008 Jack Hancock became the fourth Camborne man to serve in this capacity. Rex Bray Bray served as County Treasurer for 17 years (1985-2002). Brian Dunn served as Assistant and then County Secretary (2004-2008). In 1960 Mrs. E. Heath, became President of the County Ladies Bowling Association. Jack Hancock was honoured with Life Membership to the Western Division and the Mining Division.
In the past major alterations to the facilities at the Tregenna Lane green were undertaken with the building of a new Pavilion and Clubhouse. Planning approval was given in 1984 and the project completed in 1986, when the new building was declared open by Prof. Charles Thomas, thus maintaining the links with the Thomas family. The total costs of £11,000 were met totally by grants and voluntary contributions from members. Much of the work was done by Brian James and Charles Glidden, at minimum charge. Since then more work has been done on the green itself and the purchase of a watering system, which will aid the green in dry weather. Now getting more up to date, in the Close Winter Season of 2013/2014 considerable additional improvements are being made to the Club Buildings, with improvements to changing facilities, new toilets and improved facilities for disabled persons.
The Club has been the winner of the Western Division League One on 12 of the past 25 years, but had never won the Nicholl Cup until 2011, which coincided with the Club's 90th Anniversary. The Club has many members who have won Middleton Cup honours namely:- Frank Cattran, D.B.Cattran, F.B. Cattran, G. Clifton, W.H. Coulls, J. Grylls, R.B. James, E. Hall, H. Heath, A.D. May, A.R.
